Year III - Painting in the Peaks
A temporary ‘pop-up’ programme providing a new experience of art in the Peak District for residents of Park Hill and Gleadless Valley in Sheffield.

S1 Artspace is a gallery and studio organisation based in Sheffield, working out of Park Hill flats, that actively supports the production and presentation of new artwork and ideas. Working with this organisation, this proposed programme helps introduce the residents to both the Peak District and the benefits of art.

The final concept is a series of painting pods located around the Burbage Edge and Longshaw Estate in the Peak District. These pods provide a place where residents of both estates and members of the public can enjoy not only their beautiful surrounding but also space to focus their attention on the artistic expression of such views. Bi-folding shutters can be operated from the inside of the pods to open out or close up their view and compose a scene, which they can then paint. The scheme provides not only a new experience but also the sense of fresh air and getting ‘out there’ that is so contradictory to the busy life of the city, and the somewhat murky image that Sheffield’s industrial past portrays.

The Painting Pods are designed to be enjoyed either as an individual experience or in pairs; however, there are also a handful of larger pods, which are ideal for families to explore their creativity together.

Experimental Modelling
A large driving force behind this design was physical modelling. Through experimental ideas and prototypes I came to a resolved design with an elegant, architectonic and yet fun façade which sets the tone for the entire scheme.

The aim is to eventually leave no visible trace on the landscape, the only lasting memory of the Project being the paintings created by the painters. This not only maintains the integrity of the land, but elevates and reinforces the significance of the paintings created.
